Start with a Korean map app and a translator. Add a taxi app if you expect to use taxis, and bookmark official rail and tourism services. This smaller setup is easier to prepare than a long list of apps you may never open. The recommendations below match common visitor tasks; they are based on the developers' published features, not a claim that every feature or phone model has been personally tested.

1. NAVER Map: prepare the whole journey

NAVER's official listing describes place search, public-transport directions, real-time departure information, saved places and street views. It lists Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese map languages. Those features make it a useful first install for a visitor who needs to compare a subway trip with a walk or find the correct entrance. Check the developer's NAVER Map listing for current compatibility and features.

1. Search for your hotel using its Korean street address from the booking confirmation. Check the address, not just a similar business name.
2. Save both the hotel and the first place you intend to visit.
3. Request a route from the entrance you will actually use. Review the station exit, transfers and final walk.
4. Keep a screenshot of the address and the last part of the route in case connectivity drops.

When a search fails: copy the Korean name from the venue's official page, then compare the address with your booking or ticket. A cafe or hotel can have more than one branch. A screenshot is a backup reference; it does not update when a bus, opening time or route changes.

2. Papago: translate one task at a time

Papago's developer lists text, image, voice and conversation translation, as well as offline text translation. The available language pairs and features can differ by version. Check the official Papago listing; the developer also provides a web version.

At a restaurant, translate the name and description of one dish rather than an entire crowded menu photograph. Then ask one short question at a time. For example, “Can I order one serving?” is easier to check than a long explanation of your travel plans. Keep the original Korean visible so a staff member can point to the relevant words.

Before leaving home, download any offline language pack offered for your language pair and test it with the phone disconnected. Do not assume that camera, voice and offline text features all work without data. For allergies, medicine or another high-stakes question, use direct confirmation with the responsible person; a machine translation alone is not reliable evidence that something is safe.

3. k.ride: check your account before you need a taxi

k.ride is published by Kakao Mobility. Its listing describes multilingual destination search and driver communication, card registration and automatic payment. These features make it a practical option to investigate before a trip. Read the official k.ride listing and check the options available in your app; support for a feature does not guarantee acceptance of every card or a car at every location.

Complete registration while you have time and a stable connection. Before requesting a ride, compare the destination address, pickup pin, vehicle category and displayed charges. At a large station, a pin placed inside the building may not identify a usable pickup point. Follow the designated pickup area and move the pin to where you can safely meet the vehicle.

4. KORAIL: separate a train booking from a local route

Use KORAIL's official website to check its intercity services and booking options. A map route and a train ticket do different jobs: one helps you reach the station; the other confirms a particular journey. Check the station names, date, departure time, passenger details and seat information before paying.

Save the booking details in a form you can retrieve without searching your inbox at the platform. Include the train number and arrival station, not only a payment confirmation. If you use another operator or a booking agent, follow that provider's ticket and refund instructions rather than assuming all Korean rail tickets work identically.

5. VISITKOREA: keep an official reference close

The Korea Tourism Organization's VISITKOREA website provides travel information, destination ideas and links to its mobile app and 1330 tourism help by call or chat. Bookmark it for questions that a map pin cannot answer, such as which official visitor-information page to consult.

Before asking for assistance, gather the destination's Korean name, the address and the specific problem. Tourist information is useful for planning and language support; an urgent safety incident should go to the appropriate emergency service.

• Open each app once and finish any sign-in you intend to use.
• Check the publisher name to avoid installing an unrelated app with a similar title.
