KTX Train Guide for Foreign Travelers: Tickets, Seats and Station Tips

A practical KTX guide for Korea: where to book, how to read your ticket, choose the right station, board smoothly and handle luggage.

Korea's high-speed trains make a two-city trip surprisingly easy. You can eat breakfast in Seoul, spend the afternoon in Busan or Gyeongju, and avoid the airport routine entirely. The train itself is straightforward; the details that trip up first-time visitors are usually the booking website, the departure station and the platform display.

KTX is operated by Korail, while SRT is a separate high-speed service that mainly uses Suseo Station in southeastern Seoul. They overlap on some destinations, but a ticket for one operator is not a flexible pass for the other. Treat the train name, station and departure time as three separate items to verify.

KTX or SRT: which train should you use?

KTX is usually the natural choice when Seoul Station or Yongsan Station is convenient. SRT can be better if you are staying near Gangnam because it uses Suseo Station. Search both only after you know which terminal fits your hotel; a cheaper-looking departure is not helpful if crossing Seoul adds an hour and another transfer.

Routes and stopping patterns vary. A train may pass through the same corridor yet skip the city you need, so search by your exact origin and destination instead of choosing by the word 'express.'

How to buy a ticket without getting misled

Use Korail's official booking service for KTX and the official SRT service for SRT. Third-party sites may add fees or sell a different product. Enter passenger names as requested, confirm the date carefully, and save the ticket page or app screen offline in case mobile data is weak at the station.

Popular Friday evenings, Sunday returns and holiday periods can sell out. If your itinerary depends on one train, reserve early. Flexible travelers can compare nearby departures, but should never board a reserved-seat service hoping to sort it out later.

Reading the station and platform

Large departure boards normally show Korean and English. Match the train number, destination, departure time and platform. The final destination on the board may be beyond your stop, which is normal. Platform markings indicate where each car will stop, so walk to your car number before the train arrives.

Seoul has several intercity rail stations. Seoul Station, Yongsan, Cheongnyangni and Suseo are not interchangeable. Put the full station name into your map app and check the estimated arrival time before leaving the hotel.

Seats, luggage and life on board

Your ticket identifies a car and seat. Keep calls quiet, use headphones and move to the vestibule for a longer conversation. Food is generally acceptable if it is tidy and not strongly disruptive, but station shops are easier than planning on onboard service.

Small bags fit above the seat; larger luggage areas are limited and not individually secured. Keep valuables with you, label your suitcase and board early enough to find space. Stations and train designs differ, so travelers with large mobility devices or special assistance needs should contact the operator in advance.

Before you go: a practical checklist

  • Confirm whether the operator is Korail or SRT
  • Check the full departure station name
  • Save the ticket offline
  • Match train, car and seat numbers
  • Keep valuables with you
  • Recheck holiday schedules before travel

First-timer FAQ

Do I need to print a KTX ticket?

A mobile or electronic ticket is commonly sufficient, but keep the official ticket screen available and follow any instructions shown with your booking.

Can I use a transit card for KTX?

No. A KTX journey requires a separate intercity rail ticket; a T-money-style transit card is for local transport.

How early should I arrive?

There is no airport-style security routine, but first-time visitors should leave a comfortable buffer to navigate the station and platform.
